Yikes, I can’t be old enough to be the parent dropping my son at college! But alas, my days of keg parties, all-nighter study sessions and falling in love at the mixer a mere memory. Now it is my son’s time. As I sat at orientation I could not help but think that all the parent’s tears are not so much for thier children…but for their own lost opportunities.
One mom lamented over what she would do with an empty house…I can’t tell you how many times I wished for just a few minutes alone…especially in the bathroom. Now it is quiet…and guess what…WE GET TO BE A LITTLE SELFISH.
Just as it is a time of new freedom for our children, it is a time of new found freedom for ourselves. The best survival tip I have found is the incredible gift of rediscovering myself and my marraige. Yep, I actually like the guy I married. Who knew…with all of the carting of the boys around…I think we may have forgotten.
Pearls of wisdom…Just as your kid is discovering new stuff…You should too! It will give you something cool to talk to them about when you chat on the phone.
So go out and be young, it is the best way to keep a healthy relationship with your, now independent college student, baby.
