Fear is unpredictable. Sometimes we’re very aware of it, other times it sneaks up on us as a mild sense of unease. Sometimes we’re aware of its source, other times it seems to arise out of nowhere. The one predictable thing about fear is that we all feel it from time to time. It’s a part of what makes us human.
While fear is an emotion, it’s also a state of mind. Any number of situations or circumstances may ellicit fear, but it’s not really the situation or circumstance, but our thoughts about them, which create fear. It’s our thoughts, and attention, which fuel fear. Shift your thoughts and attention, and you’ll shift out of fear.
One of the easiest and most effective ways I’ve found to shift out of fear is to stop, take a few deep breaths, and focus on the things in my life for which I am grateful. Gratitude is a powerful antidote to fear. Gratitude arises from a state of love and abundance and fear simply cannot co-exist with a state of love and abundance. This may sound over-simplified, but I’ve found the simple answer is oftentimes the most effective. Give it a try and see for yourself.
Will the fear return? It may. If it does, stop, take a few deep breaths, and focus again on all in your life that you have to be grateful for. Repeat as often as necessary and before long you’ll find the need to do so arises less and less frequently.
