My blog was recently selected by Sean Moffitt, Canada’s Word of Mouth Expert, as one of Canada’s 50 Marketing / Media Blogs. I’m one of the few coaches to make this list and I share this accolade with other award winning marketers and journalists.
Having a blog that’s recognized as the web’s best brings you traffic, fans and eventually, clients. How can you launch a blog that makes it on to someone’s top something list? Here are my tips:
- Update often. I typically update my blog 2 or 3 times a day. Most blogging experts will recommend that you update at least 2 or 3 times per week. Whatever frequency you choose, don’t go a week without posting something interesting.
- Choose a niche. While life coaching is a broad topic, choose one area of life to blog about. I coach people on how to use technology to fill their sales funnel, however on my blog, I focus specifically on podcasting strategies. Find your niche topic, then blog about it extensively.
- Write in your authentic voice. It doesn’t make sense to sound all corporate-y if you feel more comfortable speaking to entrepreneurs. Write in a voice that you’re comfortable with. People will come to appreciate your tone if they sense you’re being genuine.
- Post about something other than the top news in your field. If you’re an etiquette coach and the President was shown on the 6pm news nodding off while the Chancellor of Germany was giving a speech, try to avoid blogging about this. Your “voice” will get lost in the shuffle as dozens of other etiquette coaches will be blogging about the same thing. Instead, find some interesting tidbit and blog about that. Whatever topic everyone in your field will be blogging about on that day, do the opposite and don’t blog about it at all.
- Refer to other people in your posts. This is a great way to stroke the ego of another blogger and get on their radar. Mention them enough (without appearing like a stalker) and pretty soon, he or she will start blogging about you as well.
- Get out there and network. While blogging gives you a voice online, try to get out and meet your community of bloggers in person (if physically possible). If one of your favourite bloggers live in your area, arrange some face to face time over coffee. If someone has organized a bloggers’ meetup in your city, attend. Don’t hide behind your computer.
Follow these simple tips and you too will become an award winning blogger.
