Barb Elgin commented on my post Creating Partnership “I’d like to know more about your gifts, esp. how you can help other gay coaches grow their practices. For example, I know that part of your work history includes working in radio. I wonder what aspects of that synergize with what i’m trying to create for my clients.” I would like to respond and create partnership with glbt coaches.
Two gifts, courage and connection, come to mind in the context of helping gay coaches grow their practices. The two are actually synergistic, the courage to be out allows the connection to occur.
As a boldly, out, gay coach I attract both the glbt community, glbt coaches and the coaching community by being a resource. Since part of my mission is to empower others in the pursuit of their dreams and goals, I believe strongly in sharing knowledge and ideas. All of the glbt groups I lead grew out of that belief. The intersection of all the communities I am in, allow access to an exponential list of experts and resources. My curiousity fuels this too.
One thing I say to clients is that we do not succeed alone. Find like minded people who will support your efforts and connect. My connection with Matt Skallerud, founder of gaywired.com is an example of this.
This week marks National Coming Out Day which presents an opportunity to gay and lesbian coaches. As coaches we are change agents. As openly gay and lesbian coaches we promote understanding and equality simply by being. If we withhold part of who we are from the world, are we not limiting our effectiveness as coaches and cheating our clients? It’s that philosophy that I bring to everything I do.
